It took about an hour to go through everything that had happened. To my mother’s credit, she did not throw things at me when Detective Sullivan and I discussed being shot at. I did notice the knuckles on her hands turned white, though, and Aunt Gwennie’s clawlike grip never left her upper arm.

“If I had to bet, I would bet that Hayward Beals has something to do with it,” I told Sullivan as she took more notes in her newly returned notepad. “Maybe Joel Clemens assisted him because he was there when we had that bizarre conversation. But the guy never said a word. One thing I can’t understand, though, is when we met Marianna Black, she was—”

“She was horrible. Really horrible. Like a woman that couldn’t see past her own wants to anyone else in her life,” Ami interrupted breathlessly. “But it didn’t make any sense. I kind of looked at her aura a little bit, and her colors just didn’t make sense with the way she was talking.”

I stared at Ami. “You didn’t tell me that.”

“Well, I mean, I kind of did. I told you that maybe she was just having a bad day.” Sullivan looked back and forth between Ami and me. “You didn’t ask me many questions about the reading, though.”

I stared at Ami. “I was sitting ten feet away listening to the whole thing. I mean, I was there, so I didn’t have to ask you much.”

“Right, right, I know, but you never asked my impressions or anything.” Ami shifted on the dining room chair and wrung her hands nervously. “I mean, I’m not saying you did anything wrong or anything. I’m just pointing out you didn’t ask, right? What we found out on the internet about her? About the things she did to help the orphanage in Africa? That stuff made much more sense with her aura than the way she was talking to me today.” Ami dropped her eyes. “That’s all.”

Detective Sullivan nodded. “What your sister said rings true with what I’ve found. I talked to some of the crew, and they had nothing but good things to say about Marianna Black—right up until two days ago.” Emma put down her pen and closed the notepad. “Two days ago, the very kind and considerate Marianna Black turned into a selfish diva. Almost overnight. Nothing was right; she verbally abused the crew if they didn’t do things the way she wanted. The craft workers reported that she turned over a table of sandwiches because they had mayonnaise on them.”

“Craft workers?” Ayla asked. “Like arts and crafts?”

Sullivan turned. “Craft services. That’s what they call movie set catering. For some reason, they can’t just call it catering.” The detective rolled her eyes. “Movie people.”

“People—movie or otherwise—don’t change that quickly,” Aunt Gwennie said. “People’s emotional natures, they are much more static than people want to believe. Sure, someone can have something happen, and they snap at people or get impatient. But the core moral nature of somebody
